Una vecchia signora indiana Tilo dal passato avventuroso e oscuro, è la proprietaria di una bottega di spezie situata in una zona degradata di Oakland, California. La sua storia inizia in uno sperduto villaggio indiano dove la rapiscono i pirati, attratti dai suoi misteriosi poteri, per portarla su un’isola stregata e meravigliosa. Lì Tilo impara la magia delle spezie che in America le permetterà di aiutare chi, come lei, si è lasciato l’India alle spalle. Nella sua bottega sfilano vite e desideri, fatiche e speranze  e le spezie, con i loro mille, minuscoli occhi, scrutano ogni gesto della loro signora con le sue mani sfiora polveri e semi, foglie e bacche, alla ricerca del sapore più squisito e del sortilegio più efficace. Il suo scopo nella vita è quello di aiutare il prossimo con i suoi poteri curativi, attraverso l’uso delle spezie, una conoscenza antica, ma tale potere comporta anche limiti personali estremi: Tilo dovrà dedicare la sua vita unicamente agli altri e mai a sé, così che funziona il suo “dono”. Ecco dunque una carrellata di personaggi che entrano nella sua bottega in cerca di aiuto. Un uomo ricco e solitario comincia a presentarsi sempre più spesso alla drogheria e la maga delle spezie infrangerà una delle regole più sacre del suo ordine: si affezionerà a lui. Una fiaba, con tutti gli elementi che la contraddistinguono come tale: la magia, il pericolo, l’amore ed il lieto fine, ma anche una lezione da imparare.

An old Indian woman, Tilo, with a dark and adventurous past, is the owner of a spice shop in a run-down area of Oakland, California. Her story begins in a remote Indian village where she is kidnapped by pirates, attracted by her mysterious powers, and taken to a bewitched and wonderful island. There Tilo learns the magic of spices, which in America will allow her to help those who, like her, have left India behind. Lives and desires, hardships and hopes parade in her shop, and the spices, with their thousand tiny eyes, scrutinise their mistress’ every gesture. With her hands she touches powders and seeds, leaves and berries, in search of the most exquisite flavour and the most effective spell. Her aim in life is to help others with her healing powers, through the use of spices, an ancient knowledge, but such power also involves extreme personal limits: Tilo must dedicate his life solely to others and never to himself, so that his ‘gift’ works. This is how his ‘gift’ works. So here is a series of characters who enter his workshop in search of help. A rich and lonely man starts showing up more and more often at the grocery store and the spice witch will break one of the most sacred rules of her order: she will become attached to him.
