Questa è l’azienda vinicola Montelena Winery, protagonista del film diretto da Randall Miller: Napa Valley, La grande annata, Bottle Shock, il titolo originale del film del 2008. Conosciuta come una delle più antiche e belle cantine della Napa Valley, la tenuta Chateau Montelena è stata fondata nel 1882 e il film è basato sulla vera storia della azienda vinicola californiana che gareggiò e vinse un prestigioso concorso parigino durante gli anni ‘70. Nel 1976  Jim Barrett  e suo figlio Bo, coltivano uva nella Napa Valley, la contea nello Stato della California. Quando l’imprenditore e sommelier britannico Steven Spurrier, giunto in America alla ricerca di concorrenti per un importante concorso enologico, assaggia per caso lo Chardonnay prodotto dai Barrett, rimane immediatamente colpito dall’alta qualità del prodotto e, contro il volere del padre, Bo decide di seguire Steven a Parigi per rappresentare i vignaioli della Napa Valley nella gara d’assaggio, la storica degustazione alla cieca di Parigi, svoltasi il 24 marzo del 1976. L’evento, che ebbe luogo presso l’Hotel Inter-Continental di Parigi, verrà ricordato come “Jusdgement of Paris”, ma passò alla storia come “La degustazione di Parigi del 1976”, che cambierà per sempre le loro vite e l’industria del vino, assicurando prestigio, merito e popolarità alle aziende californiane e dimostrando che i vini americani possono essere buoni tanto quanto quelli francesi. Da allora la storia di questa azienda prosegue mietendo successi, facendo di Château Montelena uno dei miti dell’enologia americana e mondiale.

In 1976 Jim Barrett and his son Bo, grow grapes in Napa Valley, the county in the State of California. When British entrepreneur and sommelier Steven Spurrier, who came to America in search of competitors for an important wine competition, happened to taste the Chardonnay produced by the Barrett family, he was immediately struck by the high quality of the product and, against his father’s wishes, Bo decided to follow Steven to Paris to represent the winemakers of the Napa Valley in the tasting competition, the historic blind tasting held in Paris on March 24, 1976. The event, which took place at the Inter-Continental Hotel in Paris, will be remembered as “Jusdgement of Paris”, but went down in history as “The Tasting of Paris in 1976”, will forever change their lives and the wine industry, assuring prestige, merit and popularity to Californian wineries and demonstrating that American wines can be as good as French wines. Since then, the history of this company has continued to reap successes, making Château Montelena one of the myths of American and world oenology.
